Association for the Support of North African Sloughis
Established September 15 of 2008

HISTORY

The Association for the Support of North African Sloughis was created September 15 of 2008.

As its purpose states, ASNAS is a not for profit group which organizes fundraisers to buy veterinary products needed by Sloughis traditionally bred in North Africa. It thus works for the very preservation of the Sloughis in North Africa.
The countries covered are Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya.

ASNAS member Dr. Dominique de Caprona was first contacted in June of 2005 by a young Moroccan man asking for help, because "our sloughis are dying like flies" he said. He was first referred to authorities in his country but not much happened, and following more interaction, Dr. de Caprona was invited by him to come visit the hunters of El Wafae in Khenichet. She travelled there in May of 2008 and was received by great generosity. Dr. de Caprona had brought with her the first donations of the Sloughi Fanciers Association of America's board members. These generous donations enabled the vaccinations against canine diseases of all the El Wafae Sloughis, the worming of puppies and adults, the treatments of infections with antibiotics and against ticks and fleas.

Collars were also given to the Sloughis as well as monetary contributions to el Wafae's activities and participation at the Moussem in Marrakech that year.

The first project associated with ASNAS was the lovely auction organized by the Sloughi Fanciers Association of America ( SFAA ) in September of 2008 for its Partner Club El Wafae in Morocco. It was the SFAA's special event to celebrate its 20th anniversary.  Several members of SFAA donated their time, their very interesting and beautiful items for the auction and many worldwide bid generously on them. Friends of Sloughi owners contributed also with very generous  donations in addition to the auction. This fundraiser was a resounding success raising a  very  substantial amount of funds.

To separate the accounts of SFAA  from the funds for El Wafae, ASNAS was created. The name itself was Dr. de Caprona's idea and was registered in the state of Iowa, USA. The funds raised by this 20th anniversary SFAA auction were exclusively used to provide the Sloughis of the region of Gharb Cherarda Beni Hsen in Morocco with wormers, tick and flea treatments, collars and leashes,  and other needed products.
