BOOK REVIEWS
The Sloughi is just beginning its long road to AKC recognition, and it is still a rarity in America. Dr. Dominique Crapon de Caprona has been devoted to this exotic North African sighthound since 1962 when she received one as a gift from her parents. After moving to the United States in the early 1990s, she and her husband, Dr. Bernd Fritzsch, have worked to establish the breed in this country. There are only about 250 purebred registered Sloughis today, and this book celebrates their uniqueness. It will certainly generate interest in the breed, but the author’s goal is to educate readers on the fine points of type. In her epilogue she notes that the Sloughi has “suffered greatly from the careless, uncomprehending stance that all lop-eared sighthounds from Central Africa to Afghanistan are the same breed.” Sloughis first came to the attention of Western fanciers during France’s occupation of Algeria in the 1850s, and this book traces a century of the breed’s history through art, literature, and journalism. A painstaking researcher, her sources range from obscure sporting journals to mainstream publications such as Harper’s Weekly. These references are interwoven with cultural history to create a fascinating chronology of breed evolution within the broad context of two world wars and cataclysmic changes in North African society that nearly brought the Sloughi to extinction. The abundance of beautiful artwork sets it apart from most breed books. This relatively obscure breed has found its way into an incredible number of photos, sculpture, paintings, illustrations and drawings (including some of the author’s). She has succeeded in producing a work that accurately reflects the nature of her breed: multifaceted, surprising, and very pleasing to the eye.
